I first learned about the findings of drug residuals in drinking water back in 2009 on a visit to Southern California. A business cohort showed me an article that revealed how all hospitals actually encourage their patients and nurse assistants to “flush” unused medication down the toilets. I guess the theory being that if the drugs were just thrown into the garbage then the hospital would run the risk that other people would try to recover them.
Evidently, according to this article, the drug residuals would build up over time and actually taint the entire water supply. It seemed “far fetched” to me at the time knowing what I do about dilution principles. However, as more articles started to come out on the subject it was certainly made clear that many independent tests were showing residuals of various drugs. Other stories were being published as well talking about how hormone drugs being emptied into water supplies were mysteriously changing the sex type and mating practices of freshwater fish.
